About Us
About the Gallery
MaNdebele Photo Gallery is a community gallery, resource centre, and project space located in the heart of Braamfischerville, Soweto, Gauteng. Our mission is to build sustainable interest and meaningful engagement with the arts within our local communities and across Africa. We are committed to elevating consciousness through education and storytelling—sharing our stories in the ways we know best and in ways our communities deeply understand.
MaNdebele Photo Gallery is a people’s space that welcomes individuals from all social backgrounds within Soweto and beyond. A major part of this modest gallery is dedicated to photographic storytelling, while the remaining space embraces other artistic genres, creative practices, and mediums.
The gallery aspires to be a critical monument of communal gathering, dialogue, and sharing, mobilising ideas that build trust in the role of the arts within communities. Through this, we aim to inspire social transformation by preserving our heritage, honouring our histories, and strengthening community identity.
Our immediate mission is to encourage the general public within our community to understand the significant role photography plays in our daily lives. We challenge community members to interact with photographs in new and meaningful ways, exposing themselves to the transformative values that can enhance their ability to address legacy psychosocial challenges within their environments.
In particular, our focus is on nurturing young children and youth, especially those already embracing technology to define their worldview. Our work becomes even more meaningful as we introduce programmes tailored to this demographic in our under-resourced communities—creating opportunities to co-learn photography, storytelling, and creative expression.
Through these initiatives, MaNdebele Photo Gallery continues to serve as a platform for education, empowerment, preservation, and artistic growth.
