About the Gallery
Mandebele Photo Gallery is a community gallery, a resource centre and a project space located within the community of Braamfischerville inSoweto Gauteng, aiming to build a sustainable interest and engagement with the arts in our local communities and beyond within Africa. Contributing to elevating consciousness in educating and telling our stories in ways we know including how understand them.
The Mandebele Photo Gallery is a people’s space accommodating all people from different social classes within our communities of Soweto and beyond With a major part of this modest gallery dedicated to photographic storytelling and the rest to other forms and genres of artistic practices and mediums, the gallery aspires to be a critical MONUMENT of communal gathering and sharing, mobilising ideas to invest in building trust about the role of the arts in community to inspire communities through preservation of our heritage and our histories.
Our immediate mission is to encourage the general public in our community to understand the significant role photography plays in our daily lives. We challenge the community to interact with photographs in new ways and in that expose themselves to the transformative values that could enhance their capabilities of solving legacy psychosocial problems in and around their challenged environments. In particular, our preoccupation is investing in naturing young children and youths who are already embracing technologies to define their world view. Our work becomes more meaningful as we engage and introduce programmes to this demographic in our under-resourced communities to co-learn about photography and storytelling.
